How often do you think about breathing? Chances are, not often. But not this man. Savio D'Souza is so passionate about breathing that he's abandoned his lucrative London osteopathy practice to encourage us all to breathe properly. Why?

"Today, 10% of the population suffers from asthma," says Savio, "and with help they can overcome it - not with chemical inhalers, but simply by learning to breathe properly."

Savio teaches the Buteyko method of breathing, pioneered over fifty years ago, but all the more applicable today, because of our modern sedentary lifestyle.

"Not only does this technique deal effectively with the trials of asthma, it can stop people snoring, clear up hay fever, sinus problems - even irritable bowel syndrome," enthuses Savio, whose passion for his subject is infectious. "My mission is to have courses available to everyone throughout the UK by 2012, have the technique endorsed by the World Health Organisation by 2020 - and eradicate asthma altogether by 2052."

If determination and dedication can do it, Savio will achieve this lofty ambition. He has already petitioned over 1,000 doctors, nurses, politicians, select committees and academics. In converting the world to efficient breathing, perhaps his greatest challenge is the lack of money to be made, for this technique requires no drugs or special equipment.

Savio has been running classes for a few weeks on Arran. You have the opportunity to find out more when he returns next Sunday - 26th March 2006 - 3pm at the Ormidale Hotel, Brodick.

"For me it is just natural to want to do your best at helping people and it is a tremendous buzz when you can do this. It seems a pity to hide the candle flame that brings light in a darkened world when there is so much that can be done."
