Flash Flood

Sunday, 19 June 2005

Accompanied by a dramatic thunderstorm, torrential rain in the early hours of this morning (Sunday) caused distress to several island residents and damage to property.

Good Food Shop.

The Good Food shop in Brodick became flooded as the river cut a new course down the Auchrannie road. Gas bottles and other debris shot past and across the road, carried by the tremendous force of flood water.
Tragically, the brand new Bistro was also underwater.

Bistro.

In typically positive fashion, owner Adrienne was quick to point out that, “It is only mud - we’ll soon have it cleared up!” She spoke with concern for her neighbours whose homes had been flooded.

Pumping out water.

As always, Arran’s emergency services were quick to respond to calls for help. Police, Ambulance and Fire services worked tirelessly in a calm, coordinated effort to minimise further damage and ensure those whose homes had become unihabitable were taken to safety. Campers up Glen Rosa found themselves afloat and were glad of a place to dry out.

Fire Brigade in action.

Today there is a sombre mood in the village as home owners begin mopping up and counting the considerable cost of water damage. Although the rain stopped as suddenly as it began, it will take some time to drain away.

Brodick Golf Course.

Anyone fancying a round on Brodick’s course today will need flippers and a snorkel.
