Does it need to be BT?

Thursday, 21 July 2005

As far as I'm aware, and I've seen nothing to the contrary, once BT have put the new lines in for broadband, you will be free to choose whichever broadband supplier you wish.

Remember these following points:
  • BT has been given funding by Scottish Executive to help put the new lines in.

  • No matter who you end up signing up with, BT owns the lines - like they do for the rest of the UK. So at the end of the day, it doesn't really matter who you sign-up with. If you choose a third-party, they still have to make a payment to BT.

  • You'll still need a standard telephone line (with monthly line rental charge) to be able to sign up for a broadband account.
Currently, in most large towns and cities on the mainland, speeds of up to 2 megabytes per second are available with BT.

Not all third-party providers can provide this speed.

The best bet is to shop around to find the package that suits your needs best - and remember, no matter what you buy, you'll probably find a better deal just a few days later!
