Arran is a small island, about 50 km top to bottom, off the west coast of Scotland. The island has a long history, with farming being the main occupation down the centuries. Today, however, the business of Arran is looking after the many visitors (more than half a million) who come each year on holiday to relax for a couple of weeks. And walking is far and away the most popular activity of these visitors. Arran has long been a magnet for hill walkers in Scotland with many fine climbs in the north of the island. But most people prefer low level walks and Arran has these in abundance.
To the west of Arran the nearest land is Kintyre and to the east, Ayrshire. The island is surrounded by the Kilbrannan Sound and the Firth of Clyde. It is some 20 km from the ferry terminal at Ardrossan in Ayrshire and 7 km from the ferry terminal at Claonaig on Kintyre. Glasgow is the nearest large town and is about 80 km to the north east.
