Recycling Rules

Thanks for participating in the ArranOnline.com Recycling Network.

This page contains answers to MANY common new-user questions, so please take time to read it before jumping in.

IMPORTANT

We encourage you to pass unwanted items to ArCsS at the pier in Brodick, which raises essential funds to support cancer patients from the island. However, they do not handle many of the things you may no longer need, such as electrical goods, large or heavy items.

Whether giving or taking, you have a duty of care to ensure that electrical items are safe. If in doubt, please do not take risks. ArranOnline.com and its representatives will not be held responsible for any risks involved.

Using the Recycling Listings

As a registered member, you have two methods of adding your recycle listings - you can either click on the 'Add/Edit Portal Entries' link in your member account, or you can simply navigate to the Recycle section of the website (in the Our Community section) and click on the 'Add An Entry' link.

Recycling E-mail Alerts

If you wish to be alerted to the latest items being offered or requested in the ArranOnline.com Recycling Network, please make sure you choose this option on your E-mail Alerts preferences.

You can unsubscribe from these notifications at any time, simply by unchecking the appropriate option.

Recycling Rules & Etiquette

  • Keep it free, legal and appropriate for all ages
This means, for example, no Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms or Drugs, legal or otherwise. Two strikes and you're out of the group. This is our main rule for adding items to the ArranOnline.com Recycle Network and it's a pretty easy one. Oh, and no advertising your car boot sale, please, as you're asking for money and that isn't free. If you do need to advertise, please wait for our new classified systems, which is coming soon.

  • No politics, spam, money, personal attacks/rudeness
Two strikes & you're out, ie you will be unsubscribed by the moderator after two inappropriate postings.

  • Don't use the Recycle listings for pen pals, exercise partners or a date
Recycling oneself (or one's shy friends) is, we're afraid, not allowed. There are many internet dating sites better suited to this purpose — check out MatchMkr for example, a website developed by the same team that brought you ArranOnline.com. No offering your spouse or children either!

Guidelines for adding listings

  • Make sure you include your Village name in your post (either in the title or in the description)
  • Don't post the same offer/request more than once — all entries are saved in our system, and if you start filling it up with multiple offers/requests for the same item we'll prevent you from adding future entries
  • If you have something you wish to offer as a recycle item, and something else you would like, please post these as two separate entries

Frequently Asked Questions

  • Can we use these listings to find new homes for pets?
Yes, keep it legal and be lovingly careful. NO posts seeking animals for breeding purposes are allowed on this website. Don't use this group to offer or request animals to be used for feeding other animals or people. Please visit AnimalRescuers.co.uk to look up many other pet-related resources in this area.

  • What about advertising, trading or bartering?
No advertising of your business or offering to swap services or other items for items you're seeking or offering is allowed when adding entries to the ArranOnline.com Recycle listings. If you do need to advertise, please check out our competitive banner advertising rates.

  • Who should I choose to give items to?
Generally, we advise that you wait until you get three or four responses or maybe overnight, and then pick whomever you like most! That's half the fun. You might want to consider giving a local non-profit preference if one should respond.

  • What about arranging pick-ups?
Arrange a pick-up with one person only, rather than "it's on the doorstep, whoever gets here first gets it." It's not safe and it means some people might drive a long way just to find the item has gone. Item transactions are between Offerer and Recipient only and will not be mediated or arbitrated by ArranOnline.com administrators, moderators, or representatives.

Disclaimer

ArranOnline.com members use the Recycling Network service at their own risk. Please take reasonable measures to protect your safety and privacy when posting to the list or participating in an exchange. By using the Recycle Listings, you agree to hold neither the list owners and moderators nor anyone affiliated with ArranOnline.com responsible or liable for any circumstance resulting from an exchange or communication.

Safety

Be aware! The moderators feel strongly it isn't a good idea to list your exact address in your post to the site. There are unscrupulous people out there who may "collect" information about you from your posts. Giving personal details about you or your children is also strongly advised against.

It is up to each individual member of ArranOnline.com, when arranging to exchange an item, to be appropriately aware of the potential risk of having "a stranger" come to your home to pick something up or to go to a stranger's home if you're the recipient. ArranOnline.com assumes no responsibility for this risk.

You may want to say that you'll leave the item on the doorstep while you are not home or arrange to have someone with you if there is a large item involved.

How to succeed at recycling

Be nice. When you arrange to pick up an item from another ArranOnline.com member, it is basic good manners to accommodate them as much as possible in terms of timing, and then be punctual. They are, after all, giving you something you need and asking nothing in return except you will show up when you say you will. (Leaving someone waiting is never a nice thing.)

Also, unless the giver tells you otherwise, assume that they would like you to come as soon as you can to take away the item; no more than three days after the offer is made is suggested.

Finally, say Thank You with a message to the gifter.
